The Apprentice Witch
Design in Practice
February 2021 - May 2021
Film, TV, and Stage Design
The first complex white card model I produced at university, complete with hand-draughted technical drawings, based on The Apprentice Witch by James Nicol. I took a lot of inspiration from my local village, Milnthorpe, in the Lake District and used a lot of Cumbrian iconographies within the architecture.
Part of this inspiration is the presence of metal negating magic within the book, and therefore wanted the buildings to be predominantly stone and wood. Additionally, the theme of the book is learn to get better at your skills rather than be born with them, and so I wanted the building to have lots of shabby “home-fixed” features that shows that even the previous owners had to learn skills they didn’t teach in school and got better themselves.
