Hobson's Choice
Design for Drama Set
September 2020 – October 2020
Film, TV, and Stage Design
The first of my second-year modules at Salford University, this project acted, essentially, as a means to collate all the skills we learnt in our first-year modules into one singular project, including technical drawing, storyboarding, and the creation of atmospheric visuals.
Moreover, aside from juggling skills that were previously distributed amongst a myriad of modules, we were also taught the very basics of using 3D modelling software, namely SketchUp, to aid our visual making.
Having already been proficient in SketchUp since my GCSE’s, I was able to swiftly adapt my sketches into a 3D model format, which I used as a base of my storyboards and for reference in my hand-drawn atmospheric visuals, which I chose to colour and shade using photoshop like I previously did during Design for Location.
Unlike most of the previous modules, we had received a script to work from during the course of this project, which required keen analysis and interpretive ability. I did extensive research into the time period for which Hobson’s Choice was set, the background of the author and playwright Harold Brighouse, and tried my best to create an interesting and innovative set that still fit the period.
